If you are not sure of your FDQN then there is a simple test that can be run from your desktop computer. It takes a moment and can save a lot of troubleshooting moving forward. If this is the case you could face issues when setting up Kerberos, so it is my suggestion to test this first. This means that your server is actually – this is also known as your FDQN or Fully Qualified Domain Name and needs to be noted for security (not only for Kerberos but for certain SSL applications). Your Tableau server may be accessed from but it may actually be located on domain and there is a DNS routing traffic via an alias. Your domain (for what we are interested in) is the network on which your server resides, however it may not be the URL used to access your servers. Because of this extra security it is sometimes an IT requirement when dealing with sensitive data. It is generally accepted as a more secure method of authentication because of its encrypted ticketing process which makes it harder to impersonate users. Kerberos, named after the 3 headed Greek mythological guard dog is a method of authentication for Active Directory. Kerberos is available in Tableau Server 8.3 onwards. If you’re not looking to implement Kerberos for Tableau Server and you’re happy with NTLM for Active Directory then you’re probably not going to be reading post to the end, but in the event that you are interested here are a few little questions and answers which may help your implementation.
